Our Accessibility Commitment

SongBase is committed to providing an accessible and inclusive experience for all users, including students, teachers, institutions, and individuals using assistive technologies. Our goal is to align with WCAG 2.1 Level AA, with ongoing improvements toward WCAG 2.2 where applicable. Accessibility is an iterative process, and we continually refine our platform to reduce barriers and improve usability for all learners.

1. Semantic Structure and Navigability

  • Pages use clear and consistent HTML structure with hierarchical headings.
  • Skip-to-content links are widely implemented to bypass repetitive navigation.
  • Core sections and landmarks are structured to support efficient keyboard and screen-reader navigation.

2. Keyboard Accessibility

Users can navigate the majority of SongBase—including navigation menus, forms, catalog features, modals, and interactive tools—entirely via keyboard.

Clear focus indicators ensure users always know where they are.

3. Text Alternatives & Audio Support

  • Images and icons include appropriate text alternatives or are hidden from assistive technologies when decorative.
  • TTS demos include interactive transcripts, providing equal access to audio-based features.

4. Forms, Labels, and Error Handling

  • Form fields are properly labeled and associated with their controls.
  • Inline validation messages help users understand and correct issues.
  • Clear instructions are provided for content creation, IPA exercises, and institutional tools.

5. Visual Design & Reflow

  • Light and dark themes maintain readability and consistency.
  • Layout is responsive and adjusts smoothly across device sizes and orientations.
  • Content reflows without loss of functionality across standard zoom and viewport sizes.

Current Limitations & Ongoing Improvements

1. Complex Interactive Components

Certain advanced tools—such as the IPA mobile keyboard, interactive TTS displays, and dynamic catalog filters—are semantically structured but still undergoing extended assistive-technology testing.

We are improving:

  • Focus management
  • Screen-reader announcements
  • Keyboard shortcuts and operability

2. Color Contrast Testing

Our design tokens are built with contrast in mind, but we are running systematic verification of:

  • Buttons and chips
  • Focus outlines
  • Badges and status indicators

Across both light and dark themes to ensure consistent WCAG 1.4.3 and 1.4.11 compliance.

3. Error Summaries

Inline error messages are available, but we are adding optional error summaries and ARIA alert cues for complex forms to improve clarity for screen-reader users.

4. Right-to-Left (RTL) Language Support

The current interface supports only left-to-right language layouts. Future versions of SongBase will explore expanded RTL interface support as we introduce more global tools.

Conformance Status

SongBase is substantially aligned with WCAG 2.1 Level AA, and we are progressively integrating WCAG 2.2 criteria as our platform evolves. We also provide voluntary FERPA alignment for institutional use.
