Keyboard shortcut help

Use modifier shortcuts or the on-screen keys to insert IPA characters without leaving your workflow. The guidance below applies to every layout, and you can open a specific language or the full IPA keyboard from the selector.

Desktop shortcuts

  • Choose Alt / Option for the least conflicts. Ctrl / Command + Option often triggers browser shortcuts, so Alt is preferred.
  • Hold the modifier and tap a key to insert the first symbol for that letter.
  • Keep the modifier held and tap the same key again within about a second to cycle to the next symbol in that group.

Mobile & touch

  • On mobile widths the IPA keyboard mimics a QWERTY layout.
  • Tap a key for the primary symbol. Short-press or press-and-hold to review and pick from the available characters.
  • Continue holding to move through the cycle until you release.

Display notes

  • IPA characters on this page use the Arimo font to render correctly in both light and dark modes.
  • Language-specific layouts surface the IPA symbols most commonly tied to their spellings and orthography.
  • Keys shown as &, (, ), and ? correspond to the physical keys 7, 9, 0, and / respectively.
